More store cattle needed at Bishops Castle to satisfy demand

Halls are calling for more entries of store cattle at Bishops Castle Auction to satisfy demand from buyers following a very successful sale of 150 on Thursday, April 6.

“It was a shame that only 150 were entered, as the trade was good and many more could have been sold to advantage,”

reported David Bryan-Jones, manager of Halls’ Bishops Castle office.

Overall, steers averaged 230p per kilo and £920 per head with highs of 286p per kilo for a bunch of five Limousins from Fernyhough and Fernyhough, Aberbechan and £1,215 for a Limousin from G. Jones and Son, View House.

Heifers averaged 216p per kilo and £880 per head to a peak of 249p per kilo for a pair of British Blues from T. E. Thomas and Co, Melyn Grug and £1,125 for a Limousin from Malcolm Jones.

Leading prices were: Steers; Blonde cross: £1,050 for a steer from Messrs J. K. and D. M. Jones, Cae Bettin and 261p per kilo for three steers from the same vendor. British Blue cross: £800 for a steer from Messrs H. I. and L. J. Lloyd, Weirglodd Deg and 210p per kilo for three steers from the same vendor.  Welsh Black: £830 per head and 189p per kilo for three steers from Messrs F. J. Owens and Co, Llettygynfach. Charolais cross:  £1,075 per head ad 244p per kilo for a steer from Messrs V. G. and M. Jones, Bryn y Rhesglwyn. Limousin cross: £1,215 for a steer from Messrs G. Jones and Son, New House and 286p per kilo for five steers from Messrs Fernyhough and Fernyhough, Aberbechan.

Heifers: Blonde cross: £1,070 for one heifer from Messrs F. J. Owens and Co, Llettygynfach and 236p per kilo for five heifers from Messrs H. M. Powell and Son, White House. British Blue cross:  £925 for two heifers from Messrs H. E. and S. C. Davies, Warbury Farm. Saler: £1,000 per head and 227p per kilo for four heifers from Messrs W. R. B. and P. Jones, Brynawelon. Hereford cross: £710 and 171p per kilo for one heifer from Messrs H. E. and S. C. Davies, Warbury Farm.  Charolais cross:  £860 for two heifers from Messrs M. and J. Lewis, Trawscoed and 217p per kilo for two heifers from Messrs C. P. Breese, Plasauduon. Simmental cross: £1,050 and 210p per kilo for a heifer from Messrs G. Jones and Son, New House. Limousin cross: £1,125 for two heifers from Messrs G. Jones and Son, New House and 242p per kilo for two heifers from Messrs T. E. Thomas and Co, Melyn Grug.

A prize sale of store cattle sponsored by Allflex will be held on April 20, starting at 10.30am and Bishops Castle and District Quality Cattle Association is holding a prize sale of store cattle reared on surrounding Welsh border uplands on May 4.
